Oakland’s rich history and tradition of community organizing, advocacy, and civic engagement havehas promoted the emergence of some of the most influential leaders and havehas contributed to long-lasting change within the city. Community-led organizations and initiatives continue to struggle for collective liberation from colonization and commodification that have contributed to significant health disparities, food insecurity, and poverty. This Decal will offer an opportunity to critically examine the links between systemic racism, poverty, and environmental degradation, including the practices and policies that contribute to it. It will challenge current understandings and perceptions of Oakland, to help nurture a more informed and compassionate approach, preparing you for meaningful service. The trip will enable deep reflection and learning at the hands of community members who have mobilized to address economic oppression and food insecurity.
