Community and Alumni

The Public Service Center supports community efforts to create a healthier and more just world. We work to increase accessibility to University resources and potential partners. If you are an alum of the Center, find ways PSC alumni can re-connect.

Become a Community Partner of the PSC

There are several ways community organizations can partner with the Public Service Center or other campus offices:

Host a Student through a PSC Program

Host an Intern through the Public Service Internship program. Applications for internship sites are available in January for internship placements for the following academic year.

Host a college student intern from China through the W.T. Chan Fellowship. Placements are made in March/April, and interns serve from August through December.

Host a one-time service day with student volunteers from Alternative Breaks or the Residential Service Initiative.

Reach out to student groups by contacting PSC affiliated student groups with your opportunity.

Announce Your Opportunities

Submit your opportunity to our monthly e-newsletter received by thousands of students across campus. Email a short description (20-30 words) to publicservice@berkeley.edu by the 1st of the month, and include a website URL for more information.

Post an internship with the Career Center. If you have an internship or job opening, post the opportunity with the Career Center for free.

Post your opportunity to the VolunteerMatch database. Follow the directions to post your opportunity on the VolunteerMatch website.

Contact academic advisers. Advisers distribute leadership and service opportunities to students usually in a weekly newsletter. Be selective and target advisers in the fields related to your opportunity. Contact academic advisers within the College of Letters and Sciences (search each program for the undergraduate adviser) or promote education-related opportunities to the Education Minor staff coordinator

Recruit Graduate Students

Programs throughout campus place graduate students with community organizations to conduct research and provide other services. See individual program websites for details and application information. Most programs recruit community sites over the summer, with applications due in August. Some opportunities for community organizations to partner with graduate students include:

Offer Federal Work-Study Pay

We encourage partners to offer stipends or pay so that students from all income backgrounds can serve. The Federal Work-Study Program reimburses nonprofit, school, or government employers 50% of a student’s wages. Read more about getting started.

Apply for Funding

The Chancellor’s Community Partnership Fund offers funding to campus/community partnerships whose work takes place in the City of Berkeley. Details about opportunities and application information is on the Chancellor’s Community Partnership Fund website.

“We are fortunate and grateful to have student leaders guide our youngest readers towards a lifelong love of reading and learning. The positive relationship between a college student and a young child contributes to a child’s academic success.”
