BUILD Mentor (Fall/Spring)
BUILD mentors provide literacy support to K-5th graders and help youth discover a love of reading and learning. If you have a federal work-study allocation for the year, you may be paid ($16.32/hour) and must work at least two days at a site. If you do not have work-study, you can receive Education 197 Field Study units or volunteer. Mentors read with their assigned scholars one-on-one, fill out reading logs/ reflections, collaborate with their team of mentors, and have to be fingerprinted as well as provide proof of a negative tb test. Mentors also must attend orientation, 3 trainings (2 if returning), and weekly team meetings.
BUILD Director
BUILD Directors are responsible for managing the BUILD mentoring program at a local site. BUILD Directors on top of one-on-one mentoring, recruit, hire, and manage a team of mentors, and train mentors on appropriate activities and lesson planning. They are the liaison between staff at the Public Service Center and staff at the BUILD program site. They work approximately 6-12 hours per week, depending on the site schedule and availability, and in exchange, earn $16.50/hour if they are work-study eligible or Education units through Education 197. They may also volunteer. Directors also gain the valuable work experience of running a program, managing a staff, and leading meetings and trainings. If possible, Directors work at their site every day of the mentoring program; if not, they work at least 3 days at their program site, and must be available for the full program hours/scheduled events.
BUILD Summer Mentor
Summer BUILD mentors provide literacy support to K-5th graders (or 6-8th graders at very few sites) and help youth keep reading over the summer, a time when many youth lose their literacy skills. If you have a federal work-study allocation for the year, you may be paid ($16.32/hour) and must work at least two days at a site. If you do not have work-study, you can receive Education 197 units (through section 1) or volunteer. Mentors read with their assigned scholars one-on-one or in small groups, fill out reading logs, collaborate with their team of mentors, and have to be fingerprinted as well as provide proof of a negative tb test. Mentors also must attend orientation, any required trainings, and weekly team meetings.
